Police arrested a 51-year-old man suspected of beating his girlfriend Thursday night and leaving her crumpled in the street, where she was struck and killed by a passing sport utility vehicle.

Sandra Green, 44, died the same day her daughter delivered a baby girl at an area hospital, according to her family.

Elizabeth Sutton, one of Green's nieces, said the new grandmother was an outgoing person who moved to Milwaukee from Louisiana as a small child. She has three children: two daughters and one son.

Sutton said she knew little about the man police believe punched and kicked Green in the last few minutes of her life.
Argument moved outside

According to the police account, Green and the suspect argued in her apartment in the 4200 block of N. Teutonia Ave., and the dispute carried onto the sidewalk about 9:20 p.m. There, the suspect continued to beat and kick Green, who eventually fell onto the street.

One motorist stopped to help, but another vehicle ran over the victim and dragged her about a block before stopping.

That driver did stop and will not be ticketed, according to police.

The boyfriend was being held in the Criminal Justice Facility on Friday, and police were seeking a felony battery charge against him
