Possibly one of the best writers/directors out there and yet the Academy always seems to turn the other cheek.

the only one that i didn't like very much was the darjeeling limited
just because this is a new board doesn't mean that we have to remake every thread from the old ones.

Look: in honor of the new board I am not expressing my opinion on this matter.

I couldn't even finish Bottle Rocket. Yet, I've seen all of Van Sant's Gerry. So take that to mean what you will.
"turn the other cheek" makes absolutely no sense in this context.

it was good until they left train, after that it became blah...

quirky does not automatically = genius
yeah i love his movies, but i don't think they're anything super special (except tennenbaums, b/c that movie is pure genius)
it's just like juno... i don't think that movie was at all oscar worthy, yet there it was. just a quirky movie that for whatever reason people feel the need to swoon over.

Bottle Rocket was the first one I saw, and I loved it. It does drag a bit, but it was originally a short film so I guess that's to be expected. Dignan is one of my favorite movie characters of all time.

Anybody know when the criterion of Bottle Rocket is coming out?
Also wikipedia states a criterion of Darjeeling is coming out in the fall.

I love Life Aquatic the most. I very much enjoy all his other films. Still not sure about Darjeeling. The cinematography and color schemes are fantastic but the story is a little blah.

Really like Bottle Rocket and Rushmore, like The Royal Tenenbaums, think everything else is pretty crappy. Upper class ennui overdose.

yep. only reason bottle rocket falls to #3 is because the transition from short film to full length seems to have made the middle a bit draggy.
jarofsap, holy hell, c'mon now
that's the way i see it man.
i know it's the exact opposite of the popular opinion, but what can ya do?
i really should watch Tenenbaums again though. it's been many years. i watch Life Aquatic at least 3-4 times a year, so the scales are definitely tipped in it's favour.
