A lot of the early reviews I read and spoiler sites contained false info so I was still surprised by the film but I don't understand how people said the movie provides a great set-up for a 3rd film? This movie truly is an absolute masterpiece. The Joker is a kind of villian we've never seen before. This film asks many questions. Aesthetically it's stunning. I felt like I was going to fall out of my chair at one point when Batman dove off the end of a building. It's sheer brilliance from beginning to end. In an era where it sort-of feels like you've seen and heard it all, this movie reminds you of why you go to movies in the first place--to disappear into another world for a couple of hours. This movie does that and more.

Ah, no--I don't plagiarize. But I'm no Shakespeare either so I'm sure many people are saying similar things. I guarantee my experience was not unique. The theatre I was in last night exploded when the credits rolled. I've never seen a reaction to a movie like that before. I live in Southern Maine--hardly a thriving Metropolis--and in one theater they had this showing on six screens at midnight last night and based on what I observed they had to open more to meet the demand. It rocks you to the core--that's the only way I can describe it and even that doesn't begin to do it justice. Granted I was enraptured with anticipation, but as high as my expectations were this exceeded my wildest dreams. The "Heat" references are appropriate--this movie channels many urban, organic elements of that film. For 2.5 hours this thing never slowed for a second. I just can't say enough good things about it. It was the single greatest cinematic experience of my life, no exaggeration.

Something I'd like to see some discussion about, and this is no spoiler. The Joker as an anarchist. Is he really one? We all know from watching the trailers that The Joker tries to take over; he tries to lead. But can anarchy have leadership and still be anarchy? When leadership is introduced it becomes hierarchal again, so that really isn't anarchy right? But everything else about him as a character screams chaos and anarchy. "Some men just want to watch the world burn." This is what I meant when I said that he is a kind of villain we've never seen before. What motivates him? He's a completely paradoxical character. He defies categorization. I'd love to hear some theories.

There was no direct tie-in for a 3rd film but does anyone else think that Reese will have some type of a role. I could see the Riddler being the villain, with Reese supplying him with who the true identity of Batman is considering Edward Nigma and Reese were/are both employees of Wayne Enterprises.

I'll tell you what fucked me up was that by accident in the main TDK thread I accidentally read the spoiler that The Joker was Raz Al Gol's (sp?) son. I kept waiting for that to be revealed and it never was, which I was glad about.
What were your thoughts on how the Joker was left hanging? Reminded me of the Tarot--hung man in the figure four. I really thought he was going to bite it when he was heading toward the ground. Chilled the shit out of me that he kept laughing the whole way down. He never broke character--he was cold to the core. Even Jack's Joker shit breaks when he was plummeting to his death in the original--he didn't want to die. But Heath's Joker--he didn't give a fuck; he was committed.
I might have missed it, but what was the follow-up to Bruce reconstructing the bullet to pull a fingerprint? He found the fingerprint, but where did it go from there? It seemed to me like they just left it, no? Maybe I missed something.
And someone said they saw a nod to Robin--where was that? Was that when Commissioner Gordan's kid was looking up at Batman when they go to Gordan's wife to tell her that he kicked it?
What a tapestry. So many nuances. You could dissect this movie all day and still not begin to scratch the surface. I plan on seeing it four or five more times in the theatre.
incumethod55
07-18-2008, 10:16 AM
Dent was still breathing when he was on the ground. You can clearly see his chest rising and falling. I just don't think they would've wasted the time with the Reese subplot if it isn't relevant later.
Killer Croc won't be in the movies, because I honestly believe Nolan wants to keep it realistic and not stretch it too out of the realm of reality.
Voxxamp
07-18-2008, 10:18 AM
Also, I think I read somewhere that Nolan had two possible endings with The Joker and that was the route he choose to go. I didn't want to see him die because that finality wouldn't have felt right to me, but at the same time I wanted some form of closure since we knew going in that this would be it--he wouldn't be able to come back for a third. Do you think they have some stock footage that they intend on using to tie up loose ends in the third? I'm hoping it's something more than some clever footnote piece of dialogue or sweeping reference or just total failure to recognize all together. We need something.
Watching this makes you realize all over again what an absolute fucking tragedy his death was. Just imagine what other characters he could have invented and reinvented.
8-Bit Artist
07-18-2008, 10:20 AM
killer croc is just a glimmer of hope since he was in the gotham knight cartoon that is supposed to connect the two movies
also, he could throw in the mad hatter and keep it realistic. not so much clayface, but he would still be cool to see if the cgi was done right.

I say keep the CGI characters out of it. The coolest thing about these movies--what makes them so visceral and organic--is that they are built in such a way that you believe it could really happen. Essentially Gotham is a place still bound by the rules of the real world (with slight exceptions I recognize of course). The palpability of the look and feel of the film, characters, gadgets and storylines is what has me reinvested in the franchise and the reason why I'm turning into my fifth-grade Batman geek self again.
thewarning
07-18-2008, 11:01 AM
Killer Croc was in that piece of shit Gotham Knight, I wouldn't expect him to make any appearance in a proper movie.
I was talking to Charlie the Red about the possibility of Hush being the next villain. The man is a proper threat to Bruce Wayne, especially considering how Batman is currently a public enemy. I also think that his physical appearance would strongly compliment the "Nolan Gotham"
Anyway, forget about Reese, the guy's not a character, he was just a plot point. You might as well start speculating who Tiny Lister was playing on the prisoner boat. Oh my god he was so buff maybe it was Bane and maybe Bane is going to be in the next movie

As for comparing the film to Heat, I only saw a couple of parallels. I appreciate your justification of the urban sprawl, but I don't think that's something unique enough to Heat in order to make the direct correlation. But the heist was all Heat. I loved the it was, I think, one of the best directed scenes in the film and I thought the whole film was superb. And I love heist films. Now that I see how tight that scene was, I'm interested in Nolan doing one.

The whole movie was very much its own--I don't deny that for a moment. The opening scene homage was top-notch. I saw another nod in the tractor trailer scene--that seemed straight out of Heat to me too, in the greatest way. Everything was unique and original, but the nods were there.
Even the "Why So Serious" score that clicks in whenever the Joker shows up echoed the score from Heat for me.
One of the things I enjoyed most this time around was that Gotham felt more like a real city than it did in the first. In the first, despite its authenticity, it still had that stylized touch to it with the monorail running through the city etc. This time around it was much more gritty, raw, and real. And as a friend of mine pointed out, they had the balls to shoot a lot of scenes in the daylight which was awesome--no hiding in the shadows for these filmmakers.
Christ, what a fucking masterpiece!

I say keep the CGI characters out of it. The coolest thing about these movies--what makes them so visceral and organic--is that they are built in such a way that you believe it could really happen. Essentially Gotham is a place still bound by the rules of the real world (with slight exceptions I recognize of course). The palpability of the look and feel of the film, characters, gadgets and storylines is what has me reinvested in the franchise and the reason why I'm turning into my fifth-grade Batman geek self again.
yeah which is why the mad hatter would be cool. his pedophilia background might be a little too dark for the movie though.

- Two-face was baaaaaaaaadass... though at times it reminded me of the Terminator
- Maggie Gyllenhaal, even in a limited role, was infinitely better than Katie Holmes
- I hate fuckers who clap during/after movies
- I didn't believe it when I read it, but it's true - Heath Ledger completely steals the show
- Aaron Eckhart moderately surprised me... dude was way better as Dent than I expected
- wtf was up with Nestor Carbonell (Mayor) wearing a shit ton of eyeliner/makeup? i mean, dude doesn't age, he doesn't need makeup!
- Heath Ledger in a nurse's gown was really fucking funny... and completely unsettling... nice touch

I just got back from this, and I am still stunned. Met my expectations completely, and in some ways surpassed it. Ledger's Joker was flawless in every aspect. Masterpiece, indeed.
I might have missed it, but what was the follow-up to Bruce reconstructing the bullet to pull a fingerprint? He found the fingerprint, but where did it go from there? It seemed to me like they just left it, no? Maybe I missed something.
The fingerprint was traced to the guy who rented the apartment where the police officers were tied up.
edit: oh god how I wish Hush would be the next villain.

Two Face will be in the next one still, obviously, Scarecrow possibly, which i wouldn't mind at all, and from there, they could take it in so many different directions...
Riddler, would be cool, but might be a little to similar to Joker too soon, what with all the games and stuff...
Croc, i would love to see it, the CGI on Two-Face was done well, so I don't see why they couldn't do a really good looking version of Croc...also, it would make sense to have him in it in some capacity, because one thing they haven't touched on yet is a "power" villain such as him...would be interesting IMO, especially when thrown in with Two-Face.
Catwoman could work, seeing as Dawes is gone, it would be appropriate to have some sort of love interest...
My money's on Two-Face and Scarecrow teaming up, with Catwoman thrown in the mix, possibly ending with another villain being thrown in at the end, like they did with Batman Begins...
aside from Ledger dying though, I don't see why they can't bring Joker back?

I almost wouldn't want them to bring The Joker back after seeing Ledgers performance, I don't think that can be topped by anyone. Brilliant. The next movie should be great too, Two Face will be in definitely. I know what you mean about The Riddler being too similar to The Joker too soon, I was thinking that myself earlier. Maybe The Penguin? I just hope they choose someone really good, I'm sure they will.

AMAZING FILM.
So sad that Ledger had to die cause you can tell he was going to be integral to the third film. Interrogation scene was amazing. When Joker was getting beat up by Batman and laughing it reminded me of Tyler Durden.
The only bad thing I can think about this film is that it was too short. 2 and a half hours just went by too quick.

I'm sorry, but no, no one man is bigger than the Joker. Yes, Ledger did the best job possible, and stole the show. That still doesn't mean they should eliminate the Joker from the equation completely because he's dead. Joker is the most important Batman character after Batman himself, and I'm not saying rush out and replace him, but suggesting that he should be retired is absurd. Wait another 2 or 3 movies (which will take almost 10 years), and then I think it'll be ok.
Wether or not they can find a suitable replacement to take on the role, that's an entirely different question right there, BUT, I distinctly remember when Ledger was chosen, a lot of people were questioning if that was a wise decision, and speculating that he wouldn't be a very good Joker at all, and we all know how that turned out. Who's to say that lightning can't strike twice?

I have to say without a doubt the most incredible scene in this from Ledger was the meeting with Gamble regarding his "magic pencil" trick. I heard at least 5 or 6 people around me go "OH FUCK/SHIT". A+, Ledger deserves a supporting actor nod without a doubt. Best movie I have seen in years.

Possibly the best villian ever, the guy was just ridiculous. Every time he was shown he stole the show. He made that movie.

And the scene with the cop and asking him how many of his friends he killed was insane.
The stories about how he got this scars were pretty nuts as well..

something i dont think that has been brought up yet is the cultural relevance of the sonar in the movie as it relates to wiretapping in contemporary times. although this wasnt exactly a crucial point of the movies plot, i think that the overlap between that part of the film and the current social issue makes it that much more fantastic a film, in that it not only tells sort of a timeless story but also reflects the time in which it was released.

well, i kinda think all the traditional villains who are realistic enough to fit into THIS batman universe are done with, so maybe Holiday from The Long Halloween or Hush like some other people have mentioned could be possible along with Two-Face. it REALLY sucks for the third one that Ledger died, even if he was only in it for a minute it would be so worth it :(
edit: except for riddler, who it seemed to me like reese was a set-up for. they spent alot of time on that small little arc for no payoff, in this movie at least. but the riddler in nolan's movies might be sort of similar to the joker except not as batshit crazy. and i forgot dent's wife was Holiday so that's out the window unless they change a bunch of things.
Ive been having an argument with someone she says that Batman knowingly goes after Harvey Dent and lets Gordon go after Rachel. While I believe that the Joker just gave Batman the wrong addresses. Am I right or am I just making things up in my head.
Also, I wouldn't be too mad if they didn't make a third installment. I've never heard of this Hush character before now but he seems appropriate and "Real". Most of the other villains would just seem unrealistic.

07-20-2008, 12:40 PM
I thought the movie was definitely good, but heavily overhyped. I'd only give it an 8/10. It wasn't as good as Batman Begins for a few reasons:
1.) Maggie Gyllenhaal is ugly as sin. She wasn't believable as the object of both Batman and Dent's affections.
2.) The pacing. It was boringly slow at times and then so fast during action scenes that I didn't have time to reflect or think through what was happening. The action was a bit messy at times (car chase) that I couldn't keep up with small details.
3.) Batman's voice. Is it just me or was his deep disguise voice 10x more annoying than it was in Batman Begins?
4.) We needed more Scarecrow. Why make him so wimpy this time around?
5.) Not enough character development. The first movie REALLY focused on this; the sequel didn't so much (with the exceptions of Dent and Gordon).
I do have to say that Heath Ledger was incredible and Gary Oldman kicked ass.

i think his batman voice this time around was a lot better
though now that i think about it, that car chase was a bit jumbled and it shoudlve been way more badass

Scarecrow is wimpy though...he's a psychiatrist...
i think they're keeping him on teh sidelines for nwo, because he's stitting back, and learning as much as he can about batman as possible, and formulating his masterplan. It would make sense, seeing as in the first one, he was just following Guhl's plan, and he got busted, this time it almost seemed like he was waiting to be busted...think about it. It'd be cool to see him go all badass in the 4th movie and really start fucking wiht batman psychologically...
Catwoman should be next, and she should be turned into more of a grey-area hero by the film's end, either that or she starts off that way and totally fucks batman over. Only problem i see with that would be finding an actress capable of doing at least as good a job as Phieffer did in Returns.

secondly, the biggest waste of casting wasnt anthony michael hall..it was putting cillian murphy in this movie..it was useless to even have the scarecrow appear
No way, it was an amazing cameo and established that the villain is still prominent in the Gotham underworld.

i didnt think it showed that he was still prominent..i think it showed that he had turned into basically a two-bit drug dealer..i think either way the cameo was unnecessary

I'm glad he was hardly in it because I hate him. but they probably could have gotten a complete no-name to play his part and saved some $$.
he was in the flick as a nod to Heat, which was referred to in a few different spots and clearly influenced the movie overall. i liked his part for what it was.
A sexy cat burglar couldn't be done?
well, Batman drives a tank, the Joker was a psychotic terrorist, and Harvey Dent got his face burned off and tried to kill Gordon's young son. i mean i guess they could do Catwoman if they want, but I don't really have any interest in Batman chasing after a burglar chick after the movie we just saw, do you?

She doesn't need to be a cat burglar per se. He could be chasing Selina Kyle while there have been strings of important and dramatic burglaries, only to find out who the culprit is (or not, even). With Batman, Hush and Catwoman, a potential theme of the film could be the maintenance of a secret identity
But maybe not. I just don't want to see another romantic interest unless it really has to do with Batman.

I just got back from the Imax show. The sound was amazing.
I thought that dent was breathing too at the end.
I thought the scene were Batman interrogated the Joker was alot like the diner scene in Heat.
I liked the little part with the note and how Alfred didn't tell Bruce about it.
Only part I didn't like was the cell phone sonar bullshit.
After it was over and walked out, I was totally Jealous of all the people waiting in line to go in and watch it, I wanted to turn around and go right back in and watch it again.

also, to add. The Gothem city in this one was just like Chicago or any regular city, atleast in begins they tried to keep with a little bit of burtons ideas. This one had an utter lack of the 'Gothem' Themes in all the other movies as well as comics/cartoons.

so what is imax? is it just a bigger screen or what?
IMAX (short for Image Maximum) is a film format created by Canada's IMAX Corporation that has the capacity to display images of far greater size and resolution than conventional film display systems available at the time. A standard IMAX screen is 22 m wide and 16.1 m high (72.6 ft x 52.8 ft), but can be larger. As of 2008, IMAX is the most widely used system for large-format, special-venue film presentations. As of March 2007, there were 280 IMAX theatres in 38 countries (60% of these are located in Canada and the United States). Half of these are commercial theatres and half are in educational venues. A variation of IMAX, IMAX DOME (originally called OMNIMAX), is designed for projection on tilted dome screens. Films can also be projected in 3D with IMAX 3D. The Hyderabad, India IMAX has the world's largest display screen.
The intent of IMAX is to dramatically increase the resolution of the image by using much larger film stock at a resolution comparable to about 10000 x 7000 pixels (70 megapixels). To do this, 70 mm film stock is run "sideways" through the cameras. While traditional 70 mm film has an image area that is 48.5 mm wide and 22.1 mm tall (for Todd-AO), in IMAX the image is 69.6 mm wide and 48.5 mm tall. In order to expose at standard film speed of 24 frames per second, three times as much film needs to move through the camera each second.

imax screens are ridicalously huge. they take up your whole field of view. i've seen some traditional imax stuff at the science museum. when they do things like a helicopter fly over a cliff, your brain really gets confused and it almost feels like you're falling out of your chair.
as mentioned earlier the resolution/detail is insane.

IMAX was intense as all hell. Like everyone has said, so much detail packed into the imax shots. The sound system is out of control. The shotgun blasts in the opening scene were massive. My favorite part though was after the joker escaped the jail and he is hanging out the side of the cop car while all you hear is this deafening low end booms with distortion. It made you feel the insanity of it all in that moment. So fucking good.

Saw at imax. Movie was worth my year-plus of excitement and then some. The story was handled beautifully.
It makes Ledger's death all the more untimely because he was the most shocking Joker ever portrayed. I can't even imagine someone trying to imitate it. When I saw the trailers I kind of felt like the part was very overacted, but in the movie it's quite subtle.
Obviously there are many things you have to suspend your disbelief about (no fucking way joker got that much dynamite into a hospital) but it's a batman flick so you kind of just let the super-bad guy have it.

What other characters needed development, that weren't developed in the first movie? I'm also not sure how you found the pacing in this movie to be boring. I honestly can't remember any parts being boring, which I did find to happen in Batman Begins. With just a little bit of scarecrow in this movie, doesn't that leave it open for a bigger part in another?
Gyllenhaal was acceptable, a lot of people find her attractive (not me).
Any small complaint was overshadowed by Ledger's performance. He alone was enough to make this movie better than Batman begins.

I've tried thinking about what movie was better than that, and I honestly can't think of a MODERN movie that outshines it. I could never put this above classics like the Godfather 1 and 2, but I'm comfortable saying it's the best modern movie I've ever seen.
