I figure we need a general MMA thread because I know folks get pissed when theres like 10 different threads..

So Cung Le dominated Frank Shamrock and broke his arm. and kicked him in the face a lot...

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y112/trashbucket/cungle.jpg

and I hear Tim Sylvia is going to M-1?

Adrenaline MMA replaces M-1 Global; Fedor becomes a free agent

NEW YORK -- Executives at M-1 Global announced today they have started a new promotion called Adrenaline MMA and will begin promoting major events in the U.S. beginning in June.

Adrenaline will replace M-1 Global in the U.S. immediately. The change also includes the release of Russian fighter Fedor Emilianenko, who is free to seek fights elsewhere.

Monte Cox is the President and CEO of Adrenaline MMA. Bob Clark is the COO and Brian Patton is VP responsible for sponsorships and endorsements.

Adrenaline signs MMA heavyweight standouts Sylvia and Rothwell

NEW YORK -- Adrenaline MMA announced today that heavyweight stars Tim Sylvia and Ben Rothwell have signed multi-fight contracts with the newly-formed promotion.

Sylvia (24-4) is a former 2-time UFC heavyweight champion, while Rothwell (31-5) was undefeated in the IFL for the champion Quad Cities Silverbacks.

Sylvia, 6-foot-8 and 265 pounds, has fought 13 times in the UFC and defeated top performers like Jeff Monson, Andre Arlovski (twice), Brandon Vera, Ricco Rodriguez and Assuerio Silva.

"Adrenaline is a new promotion, but it allows fighters to fight for other organizations... that's huge," Sylvia said. "I've got 3 to 4 years left and want to fight as much as possible, so this is the perfect choice for me at this time."

Rothwell, 6-5 and 265, has won 13 straight bouts, including all 9 of his IFL fights.

"Adrenaline will give me the chance to take things to the next level," Rothwell said. "I'm ready to see how I fare against the best heavyweights in the world."

Sylvia and Rothwell both train at Miletich Fighting Systems in Bettendorf, Iowa.

. . .

According to MMAWeekly.com, the promotion will hold its its first event on June 14 in Chicago at the Sears Centre. Jeff Monson v. Mike Russow is already signed for the show.

I thought it was a really entertaining fight. I'm glad Cung Le got the win.
I think that fight would have ended a lot differently if Frank wasn't being so arrogant & refused to take Cung Le down. Le has great wrestling, but Frank would have got the take down eventually and most likely submitted Cung afterwards.
Franks pride(ego) got in the way of an effective game plan.

agreed
it also seemed like he wasnt even concerned with getting knocked out, since he couldve easily be getting out of the way of cung's kicks and stuff, but just stood there.
that said, anderson silva would maul cung le still.

Dropping The Oppressor
03-30-2008, 06:53 AM
Anderson would close the distance and devour Cung Le's soul in the clinch. Cung Le does not like to fight in the clinch. He wants to stay on outside so he can constantly set up those kicks.

Frank didn't respect Le's power & overestimated his own.

frank didnt seem as light on his feet as usually. people may say its his ACL but even when it was blown in the baroni fight, he still had a bounce/rhythm. he looked pretty flat footed last night in comparison. i was expecting to see him dance around those kicks instead of eat them. all in all though, a way better event then the last UFC fights.

There's very few fighters that put on as entertaining a show as Frank. For his part, Cung Le looked solid. Much better than his previous efforts against Whoeverthefuck McCallahan and Can McCanCan.

Fickett is going to get submitted by Shields, and look like an asshole in doing so.

Cung Le, to me, is essentially Cro-Cop at middle weight. He will continue to tear through lesser opponents until someone takes the fight to him or challenges him. That said, I think the UFC needs to take a good hard look at getting him in the org. Cung Le v. Franklin, or Cung Le v. Leben would both be excellent matches.

Two thoughts:
Cung's game plan was to not go to the ground with Shamrock. Yes he could have taken advantage of that trip and could have went in for some G&P, but why take the chance of getting caught in a bad position and give up a submission?

Also, in Cung Le's Sanshou & K-1 fights, you could trip/throw your opponents, but you could not strike them on the ground. Cung was constantly throwing his opponents, then walking to a neutral corner to wait for the action to resume. So it could have just been out of habit.

I'm guessing the latter rather than the former. Cung it a top level wrestler. Although, Shamrock is no joke on the ground for sure. So who knows. It just looked as if it was it was more of a habitual walk to neutral corner thing. Who knows tho.

He'd never go to the UFC, nor does he have any reason to. He's making a fuckton of money doing what he's doing, and he's starting national exposure down the throat seeing how Strikeforce recently inked a deal with NBC.

A move to the UFC would do nothing for his career at this juncture.

1.) Strikeforce's NBC deal is junk
2.) UFC can offer him more money
3.) UFC can offer him more exposure.
4.) UFC can offer him the ability to compete against the world's best instead of the Shamrock family.

I'd say that's offering him something.

No, no, no. The UFC will not pay Cung Le 250k a fight, which is what he's making with Strikeforce (Frank makes about a million per fight. He made 1.5 million for the Baroni fight). That wouldn't make any sense for them, since he's basically a California phenomenon and isn't going to sell any seats in Montreal or Cleveland or wherever the fuck else.

It wouldn't make any business sense for the UFC to sign Cung Le and it doesn't make any business sense for Cung Le to want to fight in the UFC. They'd have to pay him too much money, an amount that doesn't correlate with his national popularity, which is minimal. They'd put him up against Leben, paying him three times as much as Leben makes. That doesn't make shit for sense.

As far as Strikeforce's TV deal is concerned, I don't know anything about it. But at least it's there. Its fighters will be on national television - I suppose that's what the goal was.

The UFC's tight pockets are starting to annoy some fighters. They lost Couture, and now it looks like they've lost Sylvia. Tito is gone after the Machida fight. There'd be a fuckin exodus if they paid Cung Le a quarter mill to beat fighters that have been with the organization for years making 50k a fight.

Unfortunately you have no idea what you are talking about. The rumor that Frank was making over a million a fight has already been debunked. (http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/templates/dailynews.asp?articleid=4224&zoneid=13), same goes for Cung Le.

Because of your inability to inform yourself to the facts surrounding an argument, I am terminating this discussion with you. Do some research, come back, make an informed opinion, and be prepared to back it up.

PS - NBC is going to air reruns of Strike Force fights at 2am+ on Sat nights. The deal is complete trash FYI.

I did pretty bad on my MMAPlayground picks and still smoked everyone in the fight camp. You guys must have had it pretty bad.

The Houston Alexander stoppage was justified I thought. I'm having a rougher time with the Karo stoppage. Yes he's one of my favorite fighters.
Yes he got destroyed with that knee and it folded his ass, but I thought that he was defending himself on the ground well enough that the could have let it go on for a minute.
I'm not trying to say that he would have pulled off the win, or even gotten out of that bad position at all, only that I think the stoppage was a little bit too early.

Pulver should be able to either sneak in a submission or pound him out if he can avoid getting put on his ass. If he ends up getting mauled against the cage, his strategy should involve scrambling to the feet and looking for a KO, since Faber's standup is pretty suspect.

The matchmaking here is really just phenomenal. I'd watch a PPV headlined by this fight.

155 is definitely the best division.

The reason I wouldn't rank the light weight division higher is that I don't feel that the world's best lightweights are in the UFC. Comparibly, the best light heavies and welterweights are in the UFC.

In the light heavyweight division, the UFC is maybe lacking Arona, and that's about it for top talent. At welterweight, maybe Sakurai.

But in the lightweights, there is JZ, Gomi, Aoki, Melendez, Ishida, Ribeiro, Kawajiri... a lot of the world's best at light weight. Now, I'm not saying the UFC's division is not stacked, clearly it is. It's just not exactly stacked with the elite of the elite fighters. Over time that may change, but at this point, I think you'd be hard pressed to say that the light weight division is deeper than the Welterweights and Light Heavyweights.

Jens Pulver is one of my favorite figures in MMA. He was the first fighter I ever interviewed--way back just after he defeated Penn. I think he's a great athlete with a good heart and I love his story of resiliency. That being said, the smart money is on Faber in this fight. Urijiah earned his stripes in his last fight against Curran--I mean the dude taps a legit BJJ BB and exhibits excellent versatility on his way to doing it. Faber's composure and mental toughness has been tested and he's shown he's got the guts to hang. I think the dude is cocky because he has the world by the short hairs, but I'd probably be pretty big feeling too if I had a chin that could crack walnuts and the fighting skills to match it.

I'm tempted to fly to CA for this one because my boy, Mike Brown, is going against Curran on the same card.

Brown will give Faber a good run for his money when they fight, but without question the future 145-pound champ is a quiet 19-year old kid from MA named Josh Grispi. Remember this thread--you heard it here first.

Fedor Emelianenko Vs. Tim Sylvia Being Discussed For June
By Jason Perkins | April 07, 2008

A proposed contest between Fedor Emelianenko and Tim Sylvia is currently in discussions according to a source close to the negotiations. Though our source informed us that this fight is a "solid possibility" it should be noted that it is far from a done deal and would require further negotiations if a basic agreement is reached. There are also other names in the works for both fighters should this fight fail to materialize.
The fight, however, if officially agreed to, will be held in Chicago this June under the newly formed Adrenaline MMA banner. The card is also set to feature Jeff Monson taking on Mike Russow in a heavyweight showdown.

Former UFC champion Tim Sylvia was recently released from his UFC contract and has since signed with Adrenaline MMA; which coincidently employs his agent, Monte Cox as CEO of the company. The promotion has also signed Ben Rothwell and Eddie Alverez as the company looks to begin stockpiling talent as they move towards their inaugural event to be held on June 14th.

Breaking News: Fedor Confirms Sylvia Fight
http://www.sherdog.com
Tuesday, April 08, 2008
by Evgeni Kogan and Greg Savage

Top ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko (Pictures) will fight Tim Sylvia (Pictures) on July 19. The Russian mixed martial arts champion confirmed the bout to Sherdog.com on Tuesday.

"[Sylvia] is a good fighter, a strong fighter, the former UFC heavyweight champion, which is important," Emelianenko said via telephone from Stary Oskol, Russia. "I am looking forward to fighting him and training hard for this fight."

While Emelianenko was short on details, Sherdog.com has learned through sources close to the negotiations that Fedor-Sylvia would headline a card tentatively scheduled for the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, the home base of HDNet Fights.

HDNet Fights CEO Andrew Simon declined to comment on the report, however sources indicate the bout will air on the Mark Cuban-owned network and is rumored to be promoted by Affliction, a clothing brand closely tied to MMA.

Affliction had been connected with Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, however a June 28 Las Vegas date has since been discarded.

Emelianenko, a 31-year-old sambo practitioner, has faced criticism from media and fans alike after a string of fights against less than stellar competition. Sylvia would represent the Russian's first ranked opponent since his unanimous decision over Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic nearly three years ago.

Widely regarded as the top heavyweight fighter in the world, Emelianenko (27-1-0, 1 NC) was recently freed from a letter of intent binding him to the now-defunct M-1 Global promotion.

Sylvia, 32, is coming off a submission loss to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (Pictures) in February at UFC 81. After a spirited performance that saw him batter his foe at will with strikes, Sylvia (24-4-0) eventually fell victim to a classic Nogueira come-from-behind performance and succumbed to a guillotine choke early in the third round.

I'm curious your thoughts... Yamma Pit Fighting.

I don't think too much of the organization itself. They don't have any fighters really beyond Ricco, Butterbean and Oleg.

But I'm curious to see how their new cage design (created by UFC founder Bob Meyrowitz) changes the flow of fights.

It seems it would indeed eliminate the use of the fence itself as a strategy in a fight and might make fights more action packed.

Dunno, I think that cage design is pretty sick. Check it out:

That "Kalib Starnes on some Canadian radio show talking about it being a protest to the UFC" thing is not true. It did not happen according to Kalib Starnes himself. Sherdog radio reported this earlier.
According to Sherdog radio (Andy Coterrel (sp?) through Josh Gross during Beatdown),
Kalib is supposed to release a statement soon, but has to have it cleared by the UFC first.
We'll see I guess.

Edit:
If you were listening to the Savage Dog Show earlier today, they were actually talking like that radio interview had really happened, but it turns out that they just got that info off of the forums too. Funny you mention that. He was actually suspended for a YEAR as a result of that. Barred from competing in New England. He addresses it in the interview.

Travis Lutter cut from the UFC
MMAjunkie.com Staff, MMAjunkie.com Apr 28, 11:39 am EDT

UFC middleweight and “The Ultimate Fighter 4” winner Travis Lutter, who most recently suffered a second-round TKO to Rich Franklin at UFC 83, has been released from the UFC.

Lutter confirmed the news with a recent blog post.

The cut is the latest from the UFC, which has been trimming its roster of fighters in recent months. As MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) previously reported, one of the highest-profile cases included Jake O’Brien earlier this month.

Lutter, who nearly submitted Franklin with a first-round armbar at the April 19 event, has been dropped from the UFC after facing arguably the division’s top two fighters: Franklin and UFC middleweight title-holder Anderson Silva.

“Friday [afternoon] I was told by my manager that UFC matchmaker Joe [Silva] had left my him a message on his phone that I had been released from my UFC contract because of my two losses in a row,” Lutter wrote.

After defeating Patrick Cote to win “TUF 4,” Lutter earned his guaranteed title shot with Silva. However, he failed to make weight for the event—earning the wrath of MMA fans and even UFC president Dana White—and despite a solid first round, he ultimately suffered a second-round submission loss via strikes.

Lutter (9-5 MMA, 2-5 UFC) made his octagon debut at UFC 50 and earned a second-round knockout victory over Marvin Eastman.

I never really like this guy anyways

“Cro Cop” vs. LeBanner at DREAM 4
Dann Stupp, MMAjunkie.com Apr 28, 11:33 am EDT

Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic (23-6-2), a former PRIDE stand-out currently on what he calls a temporarily leave of absence from the UFC, will next fight Jerome LeBanner (3-1-1) at DREAM 4.

Filipovic recently announced the bout on his official blog.

The DREAM organization replaced K-1 HERO’S after former PRIDE Fighting Championships staffers helped restructure the fight promotion. DREAM 4, the organization’s fourth show, takes place June 16 at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

Filipovic and LeBanner met once before—during a kickboxing event. Although he boasts little in the way of MMA experience, LeBanner is an accomplished kickboxer, owning a 73-14 record and two K-1 World Grand Prix titles. However, the Frenchman suffered a decision loss to Filipovic back in 1996 in what was just his seventh professional bout—and Filipovic’s first.

As for MMA, LeBanner will compete for the first time in more than two years. He last fought at a March 2006 K-1 HERO’S event and defeated Jimmy Ambriz with a first-round knockout. He also owns victories over Alan Karaev and Yoshihiro Akiyama, and he fought Bob Sapp to a draw in December 2004.

Filipovic, meanwhile, will look to build on his first-round TKO of Tatsuya Mizuno at DREAM’s inaugural show in March. The victory came after back-to-back losses in the UFC to Gabriel Gonzaga and Cheick Kongo, which prompted an eventual split from the organization. Filipovic has vowed to return to the UFC once he fights three times in Japan.

Here's video of Penn training for Sherk during his "active rest", meaning what he does in between training sessions during the day, or on his off day from training. An uphill, distance run at 8k feet elevation. The old BJ Penn sat at home and did nothing during days off, and hardly trained when he was "training". I'm not so sure that BJ is gonna gas as easily as Sherk may be hoping for. It sure doesn't seem like he's ignoring his cardio. Between the video below, the live in nutritionist, strength/conditioning routine, and sleeping in that high altitude tent, it looks like BJ might be in better fight shape than many of us are suspecting. Here's the vid.

Thank you HDNET for making this available!!

The Affliction card is going to be good. Most devoted MMA fans will watch it one way or another. I'm a huge fan, but I doubt that I'll even buy it. Not when I can stream it live then download a high-quality torrent the next day. Granted, a lot of people aren't hip to that whole thing, but are plenty who are. Is it enough to put a dent in the potential PPV buys? Probably not.
The Affliction purse payout is HUGE for this card. Hopefully they don't go broke with this single effort and are able to line up some decent cards in the future as well.

Alvarez vs. Hansen was an awesome fight for sure!

I love Nick Diaz, but he has to work his defense more. He doesn't respect his opponents power and leaves his head out there for almost everyone he fights. Even Bas was commenting on it. He's going to get KJ'ed again if he's not careful.

Melvin Manhoef looked like he underestimated his opponent. So did Miller at first too. They both got their shit together thankfully.

1) IFL is a sinking ship. That event on Friday was pretty ugh. Granted, they have some really talented fighters under their banner with a lot of potential, but I don't see the IFL rebounding. A new ring design isn't going to save them. When compared to the other promotions out there, the IFL just doesn't have it.

2) UFC 84 coming up this Saturday. Should be a great card. Post your picks. For the few of you that use MMAPlayground.com, be sure to lock your shit in there.

I'm certainly not denying BJ's skill set, however I feel that his conditioning will lose him the fight.
Take a look at his most recent fight with Joe Daddy... BJ was destroyed when that fight was over and it was only the second round. He could barely stand on his own. Sherk is going to be a lot harder to handle on the ground than Stevenson was.
BJ will gas and Sherk will take control in the 3rd.
