Dillinger Escape Plan Guitarist Discusses Season of Mist Deal, iPhone App (http://www.metalinsider.net/interviews/dillinger-escape-plan-guitarist-discusses-season-of-mist-deal-iphone-app)
Posted by Dan Rodriguez on Mon, Jun 1, 2009 at at 5:34 pm

News quickly broke last week that Dillinger Escape Plan parted ways with longtime label Relapse. Interestingly, the band followed up with an announcement that they had struck a partnership with the smaller Season of Mist Records. We caught up with Dillinger Guitarist Benjamin Weinman to learn more about their unique move, the split with Relapse, his views on the future of the industry, and an upcoming DEP iPhone App.

You say the Season of Mist deal is a collaboration with some partners and your to-be-named label. How does the Seasons of Mist partnership differ from a standard record deal?

There are many things about this release that will be very standard of a typical record deal. The things that are different are what are important. We have been offered record deals, our own labels by major record companies and distribution deals. Every combination of label/artist relationship has come across my desk at some point since our deal with Relapse expired. The truth is that the industry is changing on a daily basis. To seal our fate for the next 10 years at this time could be suicide. The question is, do we want to become a record label? Hell no. I barely have time to handle all the Dillinger business at hand, let alone all the tasks that come with releasing, promoting, marketing and distributing music. But at the same time, we are very hands-on. We know enough about our band at this point to not want to leave it in the hands of someone else completely. The Season of Mist collaboration is the perfect solution for our next release. It provides us with a knowledgeable staff and creative team to help us nurture our vision with the freedom to change our model as things change in the business.

You say Trent Reznor has been an inspiration for how you want to do business moving forward. How much of it will directly influence what you do? He opted to do a direct distribution deal with RED on his last record, why not do something like that?
Trent has proved that any band with a core following, contractual freedom and a little initiative can create a scenario where the gains are much greater for both the artist and the fan much better than a traditional label could. A direct distro deal is definitely a good move for him I think. He has created an online presence that rivals even some of the largest social networking sites. We are not there yet. I think that even smaller bands can really learn from some of the things that he has done, however. We are in the works of supercharging our online world a bit. Working on things like an iPhone app and ways to better connect with the fans more efficiently with as little middle men as possible.

What prompted you to look for something new after working with Relapse for over 10 years?

As I always say, there is the right way of doing things, the wrong way of doing things and then there is the Dillinger way of doing things. I think Relapse records could say the same thing for themselves when talking about how they have developed as a record label out of a basement in Pennsylvania. Relapse and Dillinger covered a lot of new territory together and we are extremely proud to have had such a long-lasting successful relationship. That being said, the old industry model is dead and you can either drown or get on board. Just as established record labels have to reevaluate how they do things, so do established working bands. We are not some one-hit wonder. We are a real working band. This is our job, this is our art, this is our lives. We live this shit every day and will, in some way, for the rest of our lives. While we may not be working with Relapse (or any label for that matter) in the same way that we used to, we are still just doing what we have always done, surviving with as much control as possible over what we do.

How do you feel about the rollout of Ire Works? Was there anything you wish you or Relapse had done differently to help in the promotion of that album? Did anything of that nature have to do with the decision not to re-sign with Relapse?

Well, I don’t want to go into a book about the industry here, but the truth is that when a label puts a great deal of promotion and effort into a record, it is because it is an investment into the future of their relationship with an artist. When there is no future with that artist, there usually is a little less resources put into that particular release. That being said, I think Relapse did a fine job with Ire Works. There were a lot of negative things surrounding this record and not only are we so proud of the record, but just happy it came out at all. With this record, we saw the band’s profile raised to its highest level around the world. Ire Works also got by far the best reviews of any Dillinger record to date. I would have liked the record to be release under different circumstances, but considering I guess I can’t complain.

You’ve been very vocal in the past about being happy to self-manage DEP. Do you think there’s ever a point where a band should consider management?

Managing Dillinger is no easy task. It’s really just a financial and creative decision for us. There are plenty of down sides. I really could be producing a lot more music if I wasn’t always busy with the business side of things, and that is a fact. I also think that some bands just aren’t cut out for it. Every situation and every band is different. I would say that if a band doesn’t have someone who is interested in the business side of things, or at the very least learning and asking a lot of questions, a band is pretty much doomed. If they do have someone like that, then unless some manger comes along who will drastically improve the bands lifestyle by creating so many opportunities that the their percentage is well worth it, then they should considering doing it themselves and seeing how it works out.

Yes to both of you. I was at the Miss Machine Gets Pregnant tour at Vinos and the show in Fayetteville was at the Music Hall. I think the Music Hall show was the Miss Machine Has an Abortion tour. I wore a straw cowboy hat to the Fayetteville show. Greg knocked it off with the mic stand in the first four seconds of Panasonic Youth. I love this band.

Saw these guys last night, in Chicago. I had no desire to see The #12...so I took my time getting to the show, and missed whatever happened in the first five minutes of DEP's set.

Walked in during the big climax in 'Sunshine the Werewolf' and I'm guessing that's all I missed. It was extremely loud in Reggie's, all I could hear was a wall of guitars. Bass was being drowned out a bit. New drummer holds up pretty well, but he's no Gil Sharone. After nearly every song, he would hit his china a few times. It got a bit annoying, as I thought they were getting ready to go into something else.

They played 'Horse Hunter', 'Weekend Sex Change', 'Mouth of Ghosts' and 'Come to Daddy' (as far as the few odd ones go). During 'Come to Daddy' some skinny guy that looked like he had a few screws loose, started throwing full beer cans and bottle of water, at the band. In between launching beer and water, he was flipping the band off and trying to spit on them. Guess he didn't like the cover.

'Mouth of Ghosts': Ben played keyboard and whoever their guitar tech/roadie is, played guitar.

I thought it to be slightly odd that during 'Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants' there was a castanet sample playing during that surf-y, low key break near the end of the song. Seems pointless to have that going for such a small 'orchestration'.

Great show, as always. They had their light show with them, and the floods were intense. Made it nearly impossible to watch the band, while the lights were going.

Oddly enough, I'm pretty sure one of the Madina Lake guys was there. The only reason I bring it up, is because I've been seeing him everywhere over the past few weeks.

Random Notes From The Road....

Ok so sitting backstage at Reggie's Rock Club in Chicago, about to eat some dinner, figured I'd check in with you guys. First off, thanks to everyone who has come out so far...to Long Island, to Philadelphia, to DC, to Raleigh, to Bonnaroo, to Pontiac. These shows have been amazing and very invigorating for us as a band. Every one of these shows has been shockingly high energy, and the vibe between us and you guys has never been higher. Last night alone, when within seconds the stage barricade was pushed over and eventually taken out, fuuuuuck. There are people coming who have seen us 50 times, 20 times, 7 times, and many people who are just seeing us for the first time. All coming separately, but all leaving as one big sweaty blob ready to tell posers everywhere to SUCK IT.

This meet and greet contest thing we've been doing, has also been very inspiring. We get to meet cool people every day and talk to them about normal every day things, and its really nice and makes us feel more connected to you guys, which is really the whole point right? You have no idea how psyched we were to meet a 14 year old kid with a Drive Like Jehu shirt on, a badass attitude, who knew the names of everyone in Jane's Addiction, who had been listening to us SINCE HE WAS 9, and chill and watch Guns 'N Roses Live At The Ritz 1988 with him. Every day, we meet cool people because of this meet and greet, and we look forward to it. You guys always thank us, but really, THANK YOU, cause it reinforces that we are doing something right when we meet you guys and realize that we have pretty much only awesome people in our audience and an extremely low douchebag percentage. Between interacting with you onstage, meeting you offstage, and talking to some of you on here, I've come to the conclusion and would be willing to bet that percentage wise we have WAAAAY more killer people and WAAAAY less douches than most any other band. It would suck to be in a band and realize that you wouldn't really like 80% of your audience if you got to know them. Fortunately you guys all seem to kick ass, and it's noted and appreciated.

We played that hippie festival Bonnaroo the other day and the night before our set we jammed with Nails again on the "Wish" song, in what apparently was the last song(pre-encore) of their last US tour ever(hopefully not!). That was a great time, thanks goes out to those guys for being the nicest people(band and crew) and to Trent for going out of his way to endorse us as a band and always look out for us when we're around. Check some videos of the Nails/DEP jammer from the fest, a crowd view HERE and a sidestage/backstage view HERE.

We, recently, as some of you may have seen, announced our new album title....."OPTION PARALYSIS". GET FUCKING EXCITED. We are getting together all of our full demos, and we'll be hitting the studio for real to lay down actual tracks in a month and a half to two months or so. Within the next coming months we'll be sneaking bits and pieces of our new stuff into our shows, our blogs, our video thingies, all over the place. I'm sure you caught the snippet at the end of the last video....more is coming.

ALSO....we have announced that we are creating an umbrella known as PARTY SMASHER INC. that we will be putting out all of our future endeavors under. Our records, our shirts, our whatever the fucks....all of it is from now on coming out under that moniker. You'll see that on there no matter where or what it is, and that's how you'll know if something you are getting is really an official DEP release and not a copy, like on the limited shirts and limited other things that we are gonna be doing. That will be on there, and if you don't see it, on EBAY or something, it's not legit.

Totally off topic, but a topic that everyone should be checking out if you wanna see punk ethic on display at the highest level...is the scene over in Iran. In case you haven't been paying attention, shit is going OFF over there. Revolution is breaking out, and its really inspiring to see. People over there, young people in particular, are refusing to live under a corrupt rule that disregards their personal liberties and freedoms as human beings, and are taking matters into their own hands. I'm not talking about little protests like we are used to seeing here, I'm talking about shit that you can't even imagine unless you see pictures like THESE. The government there isn't allowing in international media, they are monitoring and regulating anything that comes out of their country's media, and they are monitoring and shutting down phones, power grids, text messaging, internet servers, anything they can do. They are misreporting things to make the situation not look as extreme as it is, they have burned ballot boxes, and are beating their citizens with their own militia and the help of Hezbollah and Hamas resources as well. The only way real news is getting out is from the youth and students managing to get out twitters and pictures like the ones above. Check out a constantly updated twitter account HERE to read about what is really going on. Remember that those people there are our brothers and sisters as human beings, and that we as aware and conscious people should be aware and inspired by their activism and refusal to allow old and restrictive paradigms to shape their future any longer. That shit over there is as punk as it fucking gets, and if we have any fans over there, we are inspired by what you are going through and hope that one day your situation will be such that a band like us will be able to come play for you.

Anyhow....everyone....keep kicking ass....KILLING POSER BULLSHIT EVERYWHERE....and we'll talk to you soon.

-Greg

DEP PLAYING LOS ANGELES! OPTION PARALYSIS NEWS AND NOTES...

Ok....sorry for the lack of recent updates, but we've had our noses to the grind lately getting this record written, and haven't seen the light of day much. If you've been paying attention to our twitter accounts, you know that we've leaked TWO demo snippets so far. We usually demo the entire record pretty extensively before we enter the studio, so that we don't waste too time fiddling around once we get in there. The snippets, for those of you not following along on twitter, are:

EXHIBIT A

EXHIBIT B

We'll be using this myspace as well as our twitters to update you throughout the recording process, so stay tuned.

Latest BIG news though, is that we are playing a show in Los Angeles to kick off the whole recording process. September 5th, we've been added to FYF Fest(formerly Fuck Yeah Fest!....but I guess the new abbreviation now makes it...Fuck Yeah Fest...Fest?). Get PSYCHED if you live around here. This means that for the first time in a long time...DEP and CONVERGE are gonna be playing together!!!! Other killer bands playing include Torche, Lightning Bolt, Fucked Up, and more. Don't miss out. It's only a $20 ticket, at the Los Angeles State Park in Downtown LA, and it's for a good cause! The fest aims to raise awareness of the possible closure of up to 100 State Parks due to recent California budget cuts. It's gonna be nice to play and have fun before the pure torture of recording starts.

Check out the full lineup and details here.

We start recording FOR REAL on September 7th. Oh yeah...those demo snippets....that's Billy playing drums, not a drum machine as some have speculated. Get ready. We've got a bunch of songs that are gonna be more than enough for you all to chew on for a while.

I feel like I'm missing something. I probably am and it's probably because I've been listening to these insane songs and parts on a loop for months now and its basically starting to feel like I'm being dropped down a long flight of steep stairs over and over again. I'm telling you...every time we make a record, I think we all go gradually more and more insane from it, and we haven't even started real recording yet. We wrap on October 30th...hopefully we won't all need lobotomies by then. Why do you think we go through members so fast?

I can't believe that we start actual tracking in less than two weeks! This time two years ago we were mixing Ire Works. Time flies, and things are way different than they were back then. Two years is a relatively short period of time, but things were literally on the brink of destruction at that time and now they are stronger than ever. Crazy. Wait 'til you hear what we've got for you now. The vibe when we recorded Ire Works was defined by a feeling of struggle and hope and just staying alive in the face of almost falling apart, feeling triumphant in making it through the previous couple of years, and now the vibe is "ok now we're just gonna fuck everyone up." As always, we love you guys for being here through it all, through our evolution over the last decade, and we look forward to and get off on interacting with all of you in every way. The Dillinger Escape Plan is like a living entity to us, a cell of sorts, of which you are all a part. We're psyched to bring in 2010 and the next decade of our existence with a total motherfucker of a record.

"Option Paralysis" release date is coming soon. See some of you soon in LA, I'll update this again the day before we start recording, and then you guys can follow along on here, twitter, youtube, whatever.

Because basically it's a pub. So when a band the size of DEP are playing it, it's more of a special event type of gig. Saying that there have been bands that have booked it because they just want to do an intimate gig in the middle of their massive venu tour i.e. KSE.

ManOfAtom
10-10-2009, 08:19 AM
It's not a pub at all! It has a bar that can operate apart from the upstairs but it's a proper venue, it's just got shit acoustics.

They mentioned on the myspace blog that they'd be touring everywhere didn't they? Plus it's not economically sound to just do one tiny show.
Who knows really though.

Exact same setlist tonight, only Sunshine was played third-to-last. Great presence, shitty-ass technical difficulties throughout most of the set. Jeff jumped off the stage a bunch of times, he seemed more pissed off than usual. Not the best performance I've seen the band give, but Greg is still a charismatic frontman who knows his audience.

where did you hear this? maybe they were just over their set time and it had nothing to do with what song it was?

only reason i can think of for them to not want 43% played period is greg's tendency to do the fire breathing during it, which i dont even think he has done in a long ass time

edit: and now actually watching the videos, id have to assume it was simply to due with the time

Well we had 5 minutes less for our set at this show than normal and I think someone uhh.. Forgot.. To take a song or two off the set so we were way way way over. That projection screen comes down during change over and the second Farewell ended they dropped the screen and started playing ICP over the PA. But I mean cmon.. You can't NOT play 43% at a sold out christmas show with nearly 3000 people.. They muted all the mics.. They started out just muting the vocals.. Then they killed the guitars.. Then the drums.. I was doing Ben's pedals with my hands so he could keep playing in front of the screen. Billy was playing without being able to hear those dudes at all.. It sounded like a mess but they all know that song well enough to be able to play it without hearing anyone else. The venue dudes were screaming at ME like I have any control over a band that hangs china symbols from electrical wires in the ceiling.

2010 New Years State Of The DEP Address....and info on DRUM LESSONS WITH BILLY (http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=13372776&blogId=524751138)

Jeez....has it really been three months since the last blog? Time goes by fast when you're busy SCORCHING POSEURS. Hopefully you guys all know what I'm talkin' about and the time's gone by fast for you too, and if you don't and it hasn't, SHAPE THE FUCK UP AND GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER cause that's what you should be doing at all times! Setting the proverbial flamethrower to eleven and taking aim. In fact, let that be your New Years resolution. Repeat after me: "I, (insert name), do solemnly swear, no matter how old and tired and worn down by idiots I may become, to make it my life's duty, to SCORCH POSEURS in whichever field I choose to operate in, no matter what it is that I'm doing...FOREVER." There. You just made a fucking COVENANT. Like the Jews of old, except this time the burning smell shouldn't be coming from a talking bush in the desert, it should be the stench rising up from the trail of seared dorks you leave in your wake like a just blown out match. Got it?

Since the last checkpoint, we finished recording our new album "Option Paralysis", played a bunch of killer shows with Thursday, Fake Problems, and Endless Hallway, and then capped off the decade with two exceptional shows with our buddies Gogol Bordello, Glassjaw, Thursday, and United Nations. 2010 is gonna be a really big one for us. There's no better way for us to start a decade then by releasing a new album in the first quarter(March 23) of the first year, and then by touring and playing everywhere that this big spinning rock will have us. Hopefully we'll manage to avoid self destructing by 2011, cause as I'm sure you guys can tell we always have our finger hovering around the red button no matter how long we're around. It's the only way we know how to roll. Full speed or die. This shit ain't fun when it's safe, folks. Safety and comfort is boring, and leads to even more boring art. What I'm trying to tell you guys is to SABOTAGE YOUR LIFE NOW WHILE YOU CAN BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!!! What I'm really trying to say is that things in The Dillinger Escape Plan are unbelievably great right now. We're about to unleash what we all and a lot of close longtime critical eared friends feel is our best album to date, and we're all healthy and playing furious shows lately, so lets embrace it all while it's here cause given our track record who the hell knows how fast and how long we can keep the train runnin' this time. Lets all kick ass and make 2010 the best it can be and try to start strong, and finish even stronger than we began it. We're ready to do our part.

On another note, our drummer Billy is a man of few public words so far, since he pretty much keeps himself in a dungeon playing drums nonstop. He has, however, recently expressed a desire to share his freakish gift with others and wants to expand his super select pool of students. I don't know what the hell he and his tiny club of drum disciples do when they get together, cause it gets weird like a freemason society or something and they speak in code that only other drum wizards seem to understand, but if you play the drums and are already better than most and want in, he's ready to unleash the Secrets of the Skins(if any of you turn that into an X-rated film name or a documentary about Native Americans, I want royalties.) The man of few words and many paradiddles had this to say:

"Greetings and happy New Year to all. As we have some time off for the month of January, and some more time here and there coming up, I am currently offering private lessons to skilled drummers in the Long Island/NYC area, where I reside. If this interests you, contact me at bill.rymer@gmail.com.

-Billy"

I mean imagine him emerging out of his drum cave and saying that in a wizard's voice in a hooded cloak while waving his hand in the air. Things like "Greetings....to all," and "where I reside." He even speaks like someone who plays drums 23 of the 24 hours out of the day, and by that I mean WIZARD-LIKE. Like a wise drum wizard who plays weird shit at freakish speed. Seriously though, he sees drumming the way Neo saw the Matrix when he got all Jesus-ish, he's insane even by our high standards of mental insanity, so if you wanna take your skills to another place hit him up.

What else? Hmm. Our tourdates on the front page are about to get about a hundred dates longer, so keep an eye out for that, cause chances are unless you live in Yemen or on a mountaintop in Tibet we'll be heading your way this year. Only two months and some change left until our new album comes out, and we can't wait. Presales will start soon, with all kinds of options(enough to paralyze you...we're punbelievable OH!!!!) including a completely one of a kind box set that makes the Hellraiser box look like a happy meal box(I hear they're bagged now? what a crime), and ruined the lives and crushed the souls of everyone we had working on it to try to make it a reality. Happy New Year everyone, I hope you all have a good one. Become a better version of you. Talk to you sooner than later...

-Greg

The diminutive wailer for New Jersey spazzers Dillinger Escape Plan is ripped enough for a man five-times his size, and though he's denied using steroids (he chalks his physique up to "eat[ing] a lot of protein and work[ing] out a lot"), we're still not entirely convinced. Then again, positively destroying the stage on a nightly basis has to have some benefits, right?

Dillinger Escape Plan Singer Responds to Steroid Accusation
Posted on Jan 12th 2010 7:00PM by Amy Sciarretto

Dillinger Escape Plan vocalist Greg Puciato has responded exclusively to Noisecreep about an unfounded steroid accusation levied at his doorstep by MTV.com. A post claimed "the diminutive wailer for New Jersey spazzers Dillinger Escape Plan is ripped enough for a man five-times his size, and though he's denied using steroids (he chalks his physique up to "eat[ing] a lot of protein and work[ing] out a lot"), we're still not entirely convinced. Then again, positively destroying the stage on a nightly basis has to have some benefits, right?" To say "not entirely convinced" indicates that the writer still questions whether or not Puciato is juiced up. In the wake of Mark McGwire admitting his steroid usage -- as if the whole world wasn't already aware of that -- MTV.com's statement has certainly sparked Puciato's ire. And no, we don't think his response is a symptom of 'roid rage. We believe that he's just physically fit and well within his rights to be totally pissed off.

"In a bizarre MTV news story today about Mark McGwire and steroids, some writer guy who writes 'news' that nobody probably reads anyway decided to basically accuse me and some other musicians of steroid use," Puciato said. "Irresponsible? Yes. Understandable? Of course, because he obviously doesn't know what it feels like to have actual willpower and drive. I don't know what it feels like to be a total p---- who manifests his own inadequacies by accusing other people of cheating in order to achieve something of notice."

Puciato continued, "Unfortunately for him, they don't have 'writer potions' that he can take to better himself at his chosen hobby. While this isn't the first time that someone has presumed that I take steroids, it is the first time that I can think of that it's been publicly presumed. Although I usually take it as a compliment, it borders on slander when done in this way, and in actuality, it's more of a shame that we live in a time in which people assume that you need to cheat somehow in order to actually achieve anything worthwhile.

"Your article says more about you, James, than it says about me. Regardless, thanks for the publicity softball pitch, and you can thank me in return. Keep practicing the whole 'writing' thing, cause it apparently doesn't come that naturally to you. And meanwhile I'll go pop all the huge zits that I have on my back, beat the s--- out of my girlfriend for having a guy friend, start a fight at a sports bar, drunk-bang a bunch of 19-year-old sorority chicks and crush 20 Wendy's double stacks."

Greg, we salute your honestly-earned yard hard body and everything you said! Dillinger Escape Plan's new album 'Option Paralysis' is due out in March.
