SCEA: Portable Copy Hitting PSP Later This Year

After posting the PC World rumor earlier this month saying Portable Copy was going to be hitting the PS3 and PSP last week (and then finding out that, no it wasn't) I got a hold of Sony to find out what the time frame looked like.

I'm still pretty psyched about the ability to download my Blu-ray movies to the PSP for watching on the go.

Sony told me that according to Sony Pictures they expect to release the first Blu-ray disc movies with Portable Copy "later this year", but that they don't have a specific timeframe yet.

The technology, they told me, is currently under development, so Sony is also unclear on whether a PSP firmware update will be required to get it to work.

PSN Redesign Revealed

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe finally let the cat out of the bag today about the predicted Playstation 3 store's redesign. This April the PSN will be getting this slick redesign in Europe.

The redesign comes in response to a survey conducted late last year which told Sony that gamers wanted the store's interface to be easier to navigate.

During the update content for the PSN in the region will be suspended for two weeks while their Internet gremlins do the work. While there will be no new weekly content updates between now and the relaunch, which sounds like it will be in two weeks, users will still be able to download anything currently on the store. The revamp will not affect accounts for the virtual wallet system.

No word yet on when the update will be hitting the U.S., but we'll update when I found out.

The PlayStation 3's Home service is a free online 3D avatar-based achievement and communication system (via text, voice chat or e-motions) and that will give you access to a “home” of your own and a larger interactive world. Last we heard it was to be released sometime between April and June 2008.

Warhawk for PS3
You can launch a game you want to play with someone else from within Home. The first game to use this is the Incognito aerial dogfighter Warhawk. You’ll be given access to a “war room” where up to 8 players can meet up to discuss their strategies for an upcoming match. While that in itself may not sound exciting, these strategies you discuss can be planned using a 3D “sand table” replication of the level you’re about to play! To quote: “Warhawk players are said to be able to lay out their strategies in a properly scaled space. They’ll even be able to place little army men avatars around the map to envision their formations.”

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune for PS3
PS3 games will be able to not only display their achievements as trophies in your Home lobby, but also add 2D or 3D games (like 2D rescue helicopter or 3D bowling) in a room-environment of their own to draw attention to their latest games. Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune adventure comes to Home armed with a side-scrolling 2D arcade game! It’s described as: “Reminiscent of both Contra and Out Of This World. Sounds kind of like Capcom’s 2D remake of Bionic Commando in its execution, full of enemies and exploding barrels to shoot.” Your Home avatar will also be able to walk through Uncharted’s empty levels without the threat of being shot at.

Resistance: Fall Of Man for PS3
While we already knew film publishers can show their latest movie releases in Home cinemas as a special sneak peek event (Sony showing Spider-Man 3 for example), the same goes for game publishers. Insomniac’s shooter Resistance: Fall of Man also gives users access to a game room where you can “visit unseen areas of the game and tap into bonus content in the form of “intercepted” radio communications between European and U.S. forces. These hidden transmissions will help to flesh out the Resistance story, giving players a better understanding of the game’s conflict.” You’ll also be able to walk through Resistance’s empty levels with your Home avatar without enemies.

SIXAXIS Discontinued

We all pretty much figured that the SIXAXIS was on its last legs now that the DualShock 3 is hitting shelves. And today a Sony rep has confirmed with MTV that this is indeed the case. The SIXAXIS is not more.

Sixaxis will no longer be offered after it's completely sold through at retail (likely by the summer timeframe).
Our guess is that manufacturing has ceased (or ceased some time ago) and that it's just a matter of shipping out dusty boxes from warehouses at this point. Our other guess is that those who don't care about rumble can soon be on the lookout for some bargain bin SIXAXIES. Is that the official plural? Did we ever have a chance to finalize that?

prologue has just as much actual gameplay as most new racers these days and it's twenty dollars less that the real game will be. You'll be able to transfer your information from prologue to the new one when it comes out.

On the eve of its debut, the Metal Gear Online US public beta has gone AWOL. More accurately, Konami has announced that the beta has been delayed due to "extraordinary levels of traffic from all around the globe" causing service problems.

Konami did not give a new starting date for the beta, only to say that more information will be coming tomorrow, April 22. The end date, however, has been pushed back from May 5 to May 11.

obviously they won't be getting as much. I just think the scope of the exclusive content is being blown a little out of proportion. From a business perspective they won't add an entire new city or anything that will be a substantial amount of time (IE liberty city stories) because they would make way more than 50 million by selling it to all the systems. They'll add more content definitely, but i'd imagine it would be maximum ten more hours or gameplay.

and to be honest, i probably wouldn't buy it anyways because the game itself is so god damn long. I never finished oblivion, and i never finished any of the other grand theft auto games. 80-100 hours to do everything is a little overwhelming to be completely honest.

i can't be the only one in the boat in this. I bet that 75% of the people that buy grand theft auto play the game story for maybe 20-30 hours then just have fun blowing shit up

yes but this isn't unlike any other DLC for any other game. Microsoft probably didn't pay 50 million for them to make new content, they paid 50 million for the content that they were making NOT to come to the ps3.

thats not what i'm trying to say. I think that the DLC will be about like any other DLC that you see these days for games. it will be more missions, maybe a couple of new songs on the radio, etc. I don't think it will be anything really substantial.

Microsoft wanted a talking point that would sway people towards the 360 version, because GTA as a brand is pretty heavily tied to the playstation brand name. So they paid rockstar 50 million and they got exactly what they wanted, the people "in the know" are leaning more towards the 360 version.

Here for all the people confused at what MS is getting. MS paid $50 MILLION dollars for the content. Now lets put this in a perspective. Killzone 2, which is sonys largest game in development, is around $60 mil. Now if $50 mil is for "content", can you estimate what that means in the HUGENESS those content will be. No it isnt just extra missions and so on.

There will be DLC coming out that wont be Episodic Episodes that MS is getting. More likely extra cloths, side missions, and so on but it'll most likey be for both Xbox 360 and Ps3.

Here's the facts know about the Episodic content MS is getting:

*Rockstar has announced that the 360 version will be the definitive version

*Microsoft said at the breakfast that no other platform will get this DLC. It’s exclusive to them and to them only.

*Microsoft paid $50 million for the content. If you haven’t been in a coma you should know that entire games have been developed for less than $50 million dollars. If you think that the $50 million is just for some new cars, characters and ice cream truck side missions, you are horribly mistaken.

*GTA3 was the first in a trilogy of games. Vice City and San Andreas used the same engine that GTA3 was built on.

*Rockstar stated that if the DLC is successful on the 360, it will give them a new outlet for releasing content. A monkey could figure out that with GTAIV, they could release a GTAIV Palm Beach Stories and GTAIV New Jack City games strictly through downloads

*$50 million is in Rockstars pockets right now. This is before ANY game sales. It’s almost free money. Rockstar knows good business and this is good business. Just like it was good business when Sony paid them for a 1 year exclusivity on GTA3. Microsoft knows that GTA3 is the game that pretty much gave the PS2 so much success. They aren’t just gonna sit back and let it happen again. Now it’s their turn.

*You can expect this content to be huge. I’d say several gigs worth. Since there’s no manufacturing cost involved and the game could cost between $19-$29 dollars. Again, we aren’t talking new car and music downloads. This DLC will most likely be a huge assortment of missions and new areas opened up. It may even be a brand new storyline using the GTAIV engine. Also, you know that with GTA3, Vice City and San Andreas were released shortly after the first game. Expect the same to happen with GTAIV.

Cover story is Infamous
- "Infamous begins with a serene, panoramic skyview view of Empire City on the title screen, with the words "press start flashing". ..once you push start, a massive explosion rips through the heart of the city. Six city blocks are consumed by flame...in the center, a man named Dylan staggers to his feet."
- Dylan doesn't know how he got his powers and starts out apathetic. He then becomes invest in the city...or you can choose not to be at all.
- Dylan can run up rooftops, scrambles across building archtecture, and can seek cover in unlikely nooks and crannies.
- Sucker Punch striving for simple controls to do not so simple things
- Empire City has 3 islands
- After the explosion, the city falls into chaos. A plague makes the govt. quarentine the city. Gangs are formed.
- Dylan's abilities evolve throughout the game
- One fight saw Dylan and his friend Zeke against a bunch of guard. A couple of choices include zapping the mobs and flinging them off the bridge, or using your electricity on the environment (i.e. power generators that may be nearby) to create explosions.

- Dylan cannot use firearms since his powers are "always on" (meaning he would set off the gunpowder in bullets). The powers can complicate your actions within the world.
- There will be other "villians" with their own powers that come into play. As well as other normal enemies with powers.
- - Infamous isn't structured like other open world games with a marker on the mini map for your next mission. The team's goal is to create a world where events unfold naturally.
- For example, you're on your way to disarm a bomb, but you notice a woman in the street bleeding and screaming. Time is ticking. What do you do? Your actions affect the world at large. Hence "Infamous".
- Karma system keeps track of your actions ( I assume without showing you? Not sure). Your actions affect the actions of the citizens of the city. They may fight with you or ignore you or even help fight against you. Karma also factors into how your abilities develop.

Resistance 2 - Screens look good. In MP, players are set up in squads with "rival" squads on the other time. Game determines if one squad is dominating the other and alerts the rest of your team. Points are given for shots landed instead of kills. Kill more and die less, bonuses are given out. Kill steaks mark you with a multiplier on your head for the opposing team.
Fable 2 - Early in the game, you collect warrants for officers. You can choose to turn them in to them, or to crime lords. Decision affects how the city turns out after the timeskip.
LotR: Conquest - From Pandemic. Looks like the spiritual successor to SW: Battlefront.
Madden 09 - Uses Madden IQ. A test when you start up the game that determines how easy/hard the game will be for the user.
Infinite Undiscovery - Party is AI controlled. System is similar to SO3. Not much info.
Gears of War 2 - Nothing new
Dead Space - Zero gravity sections in the game, a telekiesis glove as well.

SOCOM - 7 maps, (Crossroads, Desert Glory and Frostfire included), 32 players matches, 7 modes. Clan based ranking system only.
Silent Hill Homecoming - nothing new
Castlevania: OoE - follows SotN but before Bloodlines. glyph system equips weapons and items to her back and arms. duel wield weapons.
Tecmo Bowl - hasn't changed much. can you classic or stylus controls.
Tomb Raider: Underworld - can take pictures to upload, screens show Lara vs. a Kraken. Graphics look pretty good.

Rumors: Silocon Knights Up For Sale (Wha?!), Tim Schafer unhappy with Activision merger and looks to shop Brutal Legend around, and a snippet saying Rush's Moving Pictures is next Rock Band DLC album after The Pixies' Doolittle. Not many rumors this issue unless it's in another segment or something.

So after some thought, I decided to plunk down the $25 for the annual Qore subscription.

The first "issue" was around 1.5gb and has videos for Socom Confrontation, Afro Samurai, Secret Agent Clank, Soul Caliber 4, Star Wars Force Unleashed. In all about 30-40 minutes of HD video is included. All the menus are animated, and each game has its own section, except afro and soul caliber. Each section has about a 10-20 second ad (game trailer), which isn't skippable.

The annual sub comes with the Calling All Cars game, which I downloaded and have yet to try. The first "issue" comes with an invite to the Socom beta as well as an exclusive Socom ps3 theme. There is also a hidden game, which I found with some button presses but didn't know how to play it.

While I know I can get the videos online for free, I don't like to stream HD content, as its always slow and takes a long time to load, so this is alright to me. The interviews/videos look great. For a first "issue", I'd say its a pretty good start for sony. Hopefully they will make the little ads skippable in upcoming issues, but they aren't that big a deal to me, especially if they are for games I haven't seen trailers to yet, and also hope there is some pretty decent exclusive content lined up.

i've heard good things but make sure tha your hard drive is big enough. to install it you need to partition the hard drive and whatever size you give the other os then can't be used for the default ps3 os

so in the process of moving i broke the base of my plasma, and until my new one comes i have to use the old 76cm crt. of course this doesnt have hdmi, only component. and that wont work unless i change it to component out on the sony. i doubt it, but is there any way of doing this without plugging it into something with hdmi?

I think you have to hold down the power logo on the console when you turn it on so that it resets your video settings. I had to do this once before.

ps3After moments of keeping it under wraps and development Sony has just released the much hyped play Station 3. PS3 2.36 has just been released by Sony today. According to the Sony executives and developers this Sony developed firmware update 2.36 is designed to improve “system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles. Sony officials told reporters that they were also happy to officially report that the 2.40 system software update for PS3 will include “XMB” access in-game. The update will also include “trophies,” an exciting new feature. The Sony officials further explained that they will be providing more details on the product soon. The PS3 2.36 is said to have more new and smart enhancements which are very appealing to the customers. The game XMB is a high tech multi tasking facility and feature which the game players can make a lot of use out of. The game players can use their Bluetooth facility when playing and act it up. They will also be able to send messages and receive them instead of quitting the game and sending the message then return to the game after sending the message.

A little while back, we heard inklings of a Wii-like controller for the PS3 making its rounds in focus group testing. It seems those rumblings have been moved into the next stage: working units of said new remote may have already been delivered to some developer partners, sources say.

The reasoning behind this controller is simple -- create similar games that made the Wii such a huge hit and perhaps the PS3 will gain a bigger audience as well. The system's got pretty much everything else under the sun as a feature (insert in-game XMB stab here), but is creating their own Wii-mote a bit too far for Sony to step?

if you care about blu-ray then get a ps3 for sure

pros: blu ray, reliability, quiet, dvd upscaling, free online multiplayer, great ps3 exclusives

cons: console is big/funky, miss out on great 360 exclusives, psn isnt as good as xbox live yet, no sony lisensed heahset for voice chat

while true, the quality varies greatly, as not everyone can afford high end blue tooth headsets. Plus they aren't very comfortable.

The headset thats coming with SOCOM looks pretty nice though, and will be the only (so far) PS branded headset.

vega you must have used one of the original sixaxis, which had a very light feel to them. the new dual shock 3's added rumble, as well as a good amount of weight. on par with what the 360 controller weighs now i would guess

yeah the new dualshocks are way better and heaps more sturdy, and yeah it still is the best console even now. i dont care how long we have to wait for home, it will rule.

also dunno if anyone has pain, but they finally released an update with a couple more levels. gotta unlock them though.
