i'd imagine that although both are huge multi-national conglomerates, microsoft can afford to eat the losses from their gaming divisions more easily than sony can, not that either is in danger of going under. plus, i don't think profitability is the main goal of microsoft's gaming division.

i was under the impression that the goal was to make microsoft more of an ubiquitous electronic media company. seeing as how the 360 can hook up to your computer through windows media center, and WMC connects your TV, 360, etc. although it seems as if PS3 is doing a much better job of accomplishing that sort of multi-purpose system. although clearly if microsoft is unable to accomplish that goal i'm sure gates will nip it in the bud for being so deep in the red.

What Sony showed us of 2.40 looks awesome. I never really missed custom soundtracks, but the Trophy stuff is fantastic. I'm a big fan of the 360's Achievement system, not for overall points, but rather to show how much I've done in a single game. Sony's version looks to cater to my tastes better than a somewhat random number scheme, which is great.

Also, the Level system is brilliant. My Xbox 360 GamerScore is somewhere close to 17,000 right now. If I get an Achievement worth 10 points, that doesn't mean a whole lot at this point. But on the PS3, if I'm at Level 12, I know that every Bronze Trophy brings me one step closer to Level 13. In the scheme of things, it still doesn't mean anything in the overall betterment of my life (getting to Level 50 won't earn me a pay raise at work or a free dinner), but it is one more little thing for me to obsess over and will start getting me to prefer playing the PS3 version of a game rather than its all-things-equal 360 counterpart.?

Burnout Paradise to receive retroactive PlayStation Trophies
With nine days to go until Criterion's crazy-fast racer gets an infusion of new content via the "Codename: Cagney" update, designer Simon Phipps has confirmed on the PlayStation Blog that the game will also receive support for PlayStation Trophies "soon." He says that Trophy support won't be part of "Cagney," which will introduce 70 timed Freeburn challenges for the game's online component.

In a surprise turn, Phipps also revealed that Criterion was "thinking ahead" and the Trophies will, in fact, be retroactive, meaning that players will receive them for feats already performed in the game. This is, according to Phipps, possible because of the way Burnout Paradise save data is linked to players' PSN accounts, which also means it won't be happening in other PS3 games en masse.

That is exactly what they are good for. I consider them to be "Bookmarks" for my games. And comparing mine to my friends to see how far they got into game can be very helpful.

Now, I can understand people not caring for Achievements, but the people who have hate for something that in no way effects them is pretty fucking stupid. It is an individual score, personal gain during gaming, nothing more.

I also love the fact that it keeps a Time Stamp on it so I can see when I played a game or how long it took to complete.

Kazunori Yamauchi: More Prologue, no GT5 soon, GT PSP still coming

We somehow managed to get Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi to slam on his brakes for a moment today and talk to us about his flagship racing franchise. According to the Polyphony Digital boss, his studio is focusing a majority of its efforts on Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. In fact, he confirmed that the proper, disc-based Gran Turismo 5 might not even roll out before 2010.

In the meantime, Polyphony will continue to expand Prologue with additional cars, tracks, and features. Yamauchi couldn't speak to specific plans, but mentioned that an new update is planned for the near future.

With all of the work his company is putting into the next console GT installment, Yamauchi tells us that it hasn't forgotten the long-delayed Gran Turismo 4 Mobile for PSP. He confirms that the game – originally announced at E3 2004 – is still actively in development, although it isn't planned for release until after GT5. That would be 2011 for those with pen and calendar in hand.

They had a beta up a few weeks ago which was what sold me on it. Not sure if they have plans to put a demo up. If you like platformer games then there is no doubt in my mind that you will love this game. If you own a PS3 there is no reason not to buy this.

SOCOM: Confrontation 1.20 Update Incoming

We are happy to announce that the SOCOM: Confrontation 1.20 Update will be released on Wednesday, October 29th, at 1200 GMT/UTC (8am EDT, 5am PDT, 1pm BST, 9pm JST).

The SOCOM: Confrontation 1.20 update addresses the following issues:

* Fixed many issues which would cause the game to crash, hang, disconnect and exit to the PS3 XMB.
* Fixed an issue which would cause large numbers of players in a high player count game to be simultaneously disconnected.
* Fixed an issue which would cause players to be invincible.
* Fixed a physics issue which would cause players to occasionally "warp" around on the map.
* Fixed an issue where a "corrupt save data" message would be incorrectly displayed after updating the game.
* Fixed some player model issues related to team swapping.
* Client/server optimization.
* Fixed an issue where the scope camera had an incorrect offset from the barrel of the gun while prone or leaning/peeking.

For players who have already downloaded and installed the 1.10 update, the 1.20 update is only ~50MB in size. For new players, the size is the 1.10 update plus the 1.20 update which is ~550MB.

The main purpose of this update is to address major stability and playability issues with the game. The stability of the game has been greatly improved with the 1.20 update. There are still a few low frequency issues which we are continuing to look into and will be addressed in a future update.

We are reading player feedback in the forums and will be making future changes to the game based on that feedback. Please keep the feedback coming.

1. Download and install TVersity (http://tversity.com/download/)
2. Download mkv2vob (http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_tools/mkv2vob.cfm)

Any .mkv file you download, you can transfer them to .vob file. There is no quality loss, the file will be about 2% bigger. If you have a bluray burner, or have DVD9's (some dvd5's will work) you can burn about 90% of all scene rips already, but why burn when you can just stream? Yes, it's still 5.1, 1920x1080 etc...

Make sure your PS3 is up to date with system updates, and TVersity is setup correctly (search for faqs etc...). If you have TVersity running your PS3 will pick it up automatically without having to search for media servers. If you can't see your TVersity media server from your PS3, then 99% of the time, there is an issue with your router (I bought a $40 netgear router, didn't work with my linksys/cisco). There are tons of help shit about this on the net, but there isn't much to it, it's all really self explanatory.

I still have a launch PS3, never had any problems. I don't know anyone with a launch 360 that didn't get it repaired. Speaking of which, a good friend of mine can repair any 360 for a flat cost of $75, or buys broken ones for $40. If interested PM me. Cons: This hard drive is taller than the normal laptop harddrive, and I unfortunately ordered it before the other reviews came up. It wouldn't fit in my PS3 -- and I subsequently had to return it.

So you still have to buy the headset, and get the cable.

Most of the xboxs come with a hard drive and not everyone needs a wireless adaptor since you can plug a cable straight into it or use one from the original xbox.

Just saying, nickel and dimed as well.
