A buddy of mine who is a pretty decent MC, hasn't listened to 90% of the classic hip hop albums out there, and basically only listens to new shit. I told him I'd burn him 3 classic albums if he promised to give them a listen.

My rough draft is Midnight Marauders, 36 chambers and 6 feet under. Please suggest your top 3 so I can compare your list to mine and adjust accordingly.

I'm also strongly considering Illmatic, and I'm sure there are several I've overlooked.

I'm kind of leaning away from shit like EPMD and Eric B & Rakim, simply because in my opinion, while they are great artists, they aren't as accessible to someone who's just now trying to get into classic hip hop.

you gotta add some KRS-1 with BDP

yeah KRS was another one I was strongly considering also.

1=1?

What if hearing them makes him a bad/boring MC? You're really taking a chance here.

the point isn't necessarily to make him a better MC, the point is that if he MC's he's obviously interested in hip-hop, and overlooking such a huge body of great works in the genre is just unacceptable.

1=1?

An impossible task.
Illmatic by Nas? Maybe The Infamous by Mobb Deep?
Would it be easier to just give him 3 CD's worth of classic tracks instead?

I hadn't considered that. That might be a better way to go.

36 Chambers is a must as well as KRS-1. Ready To Die if he hasn't.

I love the goddamn Wu Tang Clan, but I fail to see how they fit in as "classic"

are you a fuckin idiot?
The word Classic means something that is a perfect example of a particular style, something of lasting worth or with a timeless quality.
