Taylor Mitchell, 19, was at the beginning of the Skyline Trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park on Tuesday afternoon when she was attacked, according to Chip Bird, the Parks Canada field unit superintendent for Cape Breton.
Bird said hikers saw the coyotes attacking Mitchell and called 911. She was airlifted to a hospital in Halifax, where she died about 12 hours later, he said.

Bird said the area where the attack occurred is popular and well traveled. It remained closed, and park authorities had shot one coyote believed to be involved.

i get nervous camping with my girlfriend when she's on her period. maybe these coyotes smelled blood. otherwise it's pretty unreal that they saw her as food.

Camping is possibly one of the dumbest things humans continue to do. Conrad Hilton would want you not to camp. I whole heartedly agree with him.

visit alaska or new hampshire in the summer and you will be singing a different tune, nature does something to you -- makes you feel insignificant

I don't need to sleep on the ground and stop bathing to enjoy nature.

weird, i saw a coyote run across the road by my apartment yesterday and today we all got letters on our doors saying that someone is feeding the wild life (we live close to some foresty area) and that there are coyotes and bobcats so stop. saying that they could "run away with your pets". i went into the office and asked her if she wrote that because of the jessica simpson thing, which she didnt think was funny.
and now this

Coyotes are an invasive species here. They're everywhere and they freak me out when I'm dogsitting this small terrier who lives next to a big wooded cliff. I see the coyotes' eyes glint from up on the rocks when I take her out at night. Sometimes they wander up and down the driveway. I once saw one running down the main street in town. They're some mean assholes.

haliai you could always rent a camper or a cabin, there's just something about roughing it though for me
in all honesty tent camping is starting to piss me off. i'm sure i'll keep doin it for years, but fuck i'd rather a camper to sleep in.

Dumb? Depends on where and how you prepare and how many people are with you.
Also coyotes are usually only dangerous when they have never had human contact, the real wild ones will attack with a pack. Most of the time the ones who live near cities are scared of humans and know to stay away. I watch too much animal planet

Shit, even then it's about a 1 in a million chance. I'm pretty sure coyotes only take down something big if it's really sick and/or injured.

I like cabins, but if I'm going to get down and dirty with nature, I prefer a sailboat with no motor out of sight of land. THAT I could do for the rest of my life. I think campers are about the lamest thing in the world. I'd rather have a tent if I have to go camping.

Man, I suspect you people who don't like camping just aren't doing it right. Good friends, LOTS of alcohol, and shit to barbecue. Shit is a recipe for good times.

if you're building a campfire you're doing camping wrong.
well... actually i guess a distinction should be made between heading out into a campsite with a couple dozen beers and burgers and building a fire, goofing around with friends, etc... and heading out into the actual wilderness with a tent and a backpack, not building any fires (shit's harmful), not really seeing other people for a few days, wiping your ass with leaves/snow, cooking with a tiny gas burner, etc. two totally different things. both fun.

i bet she got attacked because she smelled like a garbage heap.
and i prefer tame camping. site already cleared away and all. the best is when it's by a river so you can just hop in and swim all the time.

no fire when you're doing real-deal backpacking out in the boonies, ideally. the point is to leave things the way you found them. pack it in, pack it out. hence wiping your ass with leaves and snow, unless you want to pack out shitty tp.

I did enough camping as a Geology major in college. Nothing like a hairy lady armpit in your face and your professor's night-farts to turn you off to it. It's weird though: they were all really into camping but couldn't stand the idea of going out on a traditional sailing ship for days or weeks. I really don't get much from sleeping with mosquitoes and dirt but I'm happy to go without running water and electricity if I'm out at sea. How do you hardcore camping folks feel about it? I wonder if it's a mutually exclusive thing.
